Summer Learning Journey Day 1 Activity 1

In this activity, I had to read the Maori legend Maui and the big fish the write three facts that I learned from the story and also if I knew of any other Maori legends.

After reading Maui and the big fish I learned that...

  1. New Zealand was created by Maui after he pulled a big fish which created the north island and his canoe was formed by his canoe/waka.
  2. Maui used one of his ancestor's jawbone to pull up the big fish
  3. Maui was a trickster

I haven't heard that many legends about Maui. However, I have heard one of them. Maui and the sun, in this legend Maui and his brothers, slowed down the sun to make the days longer.

Hey Harrison
Some of the information here were very different and I didn't know about. They were very interesting to read. How did you find your answers and was it hard??

Hi Harrison,

You have some very interesting facts here. I really liked how you added in a little bit of what you knew about Maui and his brothers slowing down the sun. In your first sentence your "I" should be capital and not lowercase but other wise this post was great. Keep up the great work!. Quick question, What was your favourite bit of this activity and why?

You are so creative and intelligent when it comes to writing, and as you wrote those 3 facts it was very specific and it was very well written with a lot of detail. What is your favourite story? I love your work

Hey Harrison!

Welcome to the Summer Learning Journey! It's awesome to have you join us :)

You've done a great job completing this first activity - I like that you told us the other legend you know about and what it's about. Where did you learn about Maui and the Sun?

Keep up the great work and I look forward to blogging with you as you continue on with the activities!

Nicky :)

Hey Mya
Thank you for your comment. I have actually heard of this story before but as I haven't grown up with these stories and legends as you and the others have. I believe that the main learning point was to read and understand this story.

Hello Sarah
Thank for your compliment on your work. Now I'm not sure if you mean my favorite Maori story or just my favorite story. So I'll just answer them both. My favorite Maori story is Maui and the sun and my favorite story are any of the Harry Potter books. What are your favorite stories?

Hello Nicky
Thank you for such an inviting comment. I believe that the first time I heard Maui and the Fish and also Maui and the Sun was at school whilst we were studying maori legends.
