Breakfast Cups

Today for science with continued with our topic study of chemical changes. So today we made breakfast cups. Which is baked beans and an egg inside buttered bread topped with some parsley. This is a chemical change. It is a chemical change becuase once you cook the egg you can't go back to a raw egg.

Elephants Toothpaste

Today in reading we conducted the Elephants Toothpaste Experiment. The ingredients we used were: hydrogen peroxide, blue food colouring, dishwashing liquid, warm water and yeast. In my opinion it didn't really work because there was too big of an opening for the gasses to escape from. What is supposed to happen is that it makes a smooth foam that bubbles up and overfills. Ours was more like a liquid that just overflowed due to the fact that the glass couldn't hold any more liquid.

Chemical Change: Fire

Ask a question
What will happen when the fire from the match and the paper mix?
Construct a hypothesis( make a guess)
My hypothesis is the the paper will burn after it is ignited with fire.
Conduct the experiment
Paper and Fire
Record your observations and data colour change,
  • The paper changed colour
  • The heat/temperature of the paper
  • The was a release of gas in the form of smoke
  • It was irreversible
  • A new substance was formed (Newspaper→Burned Paper)
Analyse information
As all of these events have happened this is a chemical change.
Report results
In conclusion, the paper and fire experiment is a chemical change. This is true because there was a change of colour as the paper turned from a white-grey to a dark black. There was also a severe change in heat/temperature. Not only that but there was also a large amount of gas released in the form of the smoke. It is also a chemical change because a new substance was formed in with the old substance being newspaper and the new substance was burnt paper this change is also irreversible.

Making Pancakes using the Scientific Method

Today in science we made pancakes to show evidence of a chemical change. We followed the scientific method. Which is; ask a question, make a hypothesis/guess, conduct an experiment, collect the data, analyze the information report the results. To start off we had to ask a question, my question was"Why does this mixture chemically change the way it does?" Not only did we have to ask a question we also had to hypothesize what would happen, my hypothesis was "When the batter gets heated up it will expand and solidify " which was correct!

To start off we mixed all of the ingredients together, then we pour the batter into a frying pan. Immediately you could see signs off a chemical change. After waiting for a while you could see that the batter was starting to bubble, this means that it was starting to release gas, it was also changing color from a pasty, white batter to a light brown, it was also giving off immense amounts of heat.

Science Expo

Today we had the school wide science expo. Each class had to present their topic learning in a fun and creative way. Our class displayed it by creating toys using simple machines, we had the option of using either pulleys or wheel and axles. I made mine using pulleys. I really enjoyed looking and learning about the different simple machines.
