For the most part when we get another language wrong the locals just laugh. I was once in a restaurant in South Korea and I accidentally called the older woman serving us "Honey" instead of calling out "Over here please" hahaha! All my Korean friends laughed and the older lady was really nice to me all night.
My Dad has had one or two of those conversations when we have been in a foreign country...but surley its better to try than be ignorant and expect them to speak our language?!
Absolutely agree! I feel it is so rude for travelers to expect all locals to speak English. It is lucky for us though, that English is considered the worlds second language.

Well if english is the worlds second language then what is the first?
Most countries official language will be their first language.
Yeah that is why the world is so unique.
